Cortez is a ranching and tourist community in Montezuma County approximately 85 miles SW of Telluride and is a gateway to the deserts of the Southwest. It lies on the main throughway to Durango and the Durango Mountain Resort. To the south lie Farmington and Shiprock, N. M. and to the southwest is the Grand Canyon which bisects the
Colorado Plateau.
