Montrose is a fast growing community in the Uncompahgre Valley approximately 65 miles from Telluride and lying in Montrose County. Highway 50 running west from Gunnison and the Continental Divide intersects Highway 550 in the center of Montrose. Highway 50 turns north to Grand Junction while Highway 550 goes south through Ridgway, Ouray, across Red Mountain Pass continuing on to Silverton, across Molas Pass and Coal Bank Pass then to Durango.

Montrose County Airport serves the region.

The Uncompahgre River runs northerly from it's headwaters above Ouray. The Ridgway Reservoir sits 15 miles upstream from Montrose,
